ITP, for a teaching of excellence

01 August 2018

The International Teachers Program, the main global teacher development program that supports business schools in its aims of providing excellent teaching, has finished in its 2017-2018 version. The program is led by 12 of the most prestigious business schools internationally recognized: HEC Paris, London Business School, IAE Aix-en-Provence, Stern Business School- NYU, Kellogg School of Management-Northwestern University, SDA Bocconi Milan.

As a result of the Columbus alliance with ITP, Miguel Córdova, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and Gustavo Bado, from the University of Costa Rica, business professors from Columbus Member Universities have been granted scholarships to participate in this program of excellence. Below, we find their testimonies about this experience.

MIGUEL CÓRDOVA

Professor of Management Sciences - Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

The ITP program impacted on my life like no other specialization program or course I had done before. I had access to first-class teachers and mentors, as well as a network of wonderful professionals, now great friends, with whom we had the opportunity to live this experience together, strengthen ties and collaboratively build an important part of our professional future. It was great how the cultural barriers were progressively overcome until they were able to generate a common and extremely constructive dialogue.

On a personal level, it has become an extraordinary channel for the transmission of good teaching and research practices. In each of the sessions and workshops we have had the opportunity to share experiences, methods, techniques and tools that each one currently uses, which has contributed to expand the mechanisms that as a teacher I can use both in the dictation of classes and for the development of academic research. In the same way, many of the sessions have helped me to get to know myself better as a teacher, in the classroom and outside of it, identifying points of opportunity for improvement, thus strengthening my development process and teaching career.

On the other hand, regarding the contribution at the institutional level, it became possible to know and compare the different models and structures of other management units around the world. Likewise, these new professional ties allowed us to know the lines of research that are being followed by professors and academic units in universities in other countries, which allows us to project short and long-term collaboration initiatives for the benefit of two or more educational institutions. I greatly appreciate having had the opportunity to take the ITP, the organizers and partners of the program for this unique and invaluable experience for us who, as teachers, are also responsible for touching in a certain way the lives of other people.

GUSTAVO BADO

Director EAN – School of Business Administration - Universidad de Costa Rica

The experience in the ITP 2018 has definitely been of great benefit. Having the opportunity to share good teaching practices with academics from the most prestigious business schools in Europe has been great. It has been very interesting to know through cultural diversity the different challenges that different schools have in different latitudes, which allows me to conclude that despite the cultural differences, the challenges in higher education are common no matter the continent.

A great contribution that the course leaves me is the development of a wide network of contacts in all the participating Business Schools. The coexistence during the two weeks achieved the development of a true ITP community. It is worth noting the level of academic professionalism of the teaching instructors, as well as the level of detail with which different aspects of the specific teaching practice in the Businesses were worked on. The exercise of Microteaching was really instructive, we all concluded that in addition to learning from our experience we had great lessons from our teammates.

As a Director, I hope to disseminate all the knowledge learned in the program through workshops and reflection sessions with our teaching team at the UCR.

Thanks Columbus for this great opportunity.
