"Universities transcend governments": Benjamin Scharifker, rector of the Universidad Metropolitana in Venezuela

10 February 2017

The rector of the Universidad Metropolitana in Venezuela, Benjamin Scharifker, gave an interview for the latest edition of the magazine Contrapunto where he presents his views on the social and political situation  and particularly on higher education in Venezuela.

"I do not believe in changing laws to change reality. You can write a law, but the law does not change reality. The reality is very stubborn. Then to change reality, I think there has to be a conjunction of interests willing to change that reality. "

"If there is a place in the world where we can do something to accommodate the world, it is in Venezuela. If any place in the world presents a major challenge that is Venezuela. I studied my postgraduate degree oversees, I have worked in universities in other countries and I think the impact of my work is higher in Venezuela than in other places. It's going to cost me a lot more to do things, yes, it's true, but it's going to deliver much more in Venezuela than elsewhere."
